Sous un autre angle
De là l’utilisation de son prénom dans mon titre.
Il y a plusieurs aspects à relever, bien sûr. De député au PQ, je l’ai vu devenir ministre le lendemain. D’indépendantiste pressé, je l’ai vu devenir fédéraliste et former son propre parti politique. Un millionnaire tombé du ciel. De loin, je regardais cette réalité. Celle-ci et bien d’autres.
Apprécier quelqu’un est une démarche humaine. En superficie, on aime telle caractéristique et, ce faisant, on réduit l’autre sans lui vouloir du mal. Comme pour tous les politiciens et politiciennes, je reconnais le sacrifice fait pour la chose publique. Évidemment, je suis humain, j’ai un attachement particulier avec les indépendantistes semblables à moi. Un lien imaginé plus facile.
Spontanément, donc, j’ai aussi cette tendance à réduire l’autre à cet aspect apprécié ou, au contraire, à un autre qui me déplaît. En commentaire, des Musulmans se sentent rejetés en se concentrant sur cette loi et sur la laïcité. Ailleurs, je l’apprécie pour Air Transat, pour son temps consacré au PQ et pour sa volonté de consolidation du Québec au sein du Canada. Malgré ses efforts fédéralistes, j’ai continué à apprécier ses efforts pour le peuple québécois.
Dans mon regard, les Britanniques ont cédé le territoire du Québec aux Français catholiques pour convenir d’une paix. Une reddition de la France sous condition de protection de ses colons : le fameux Traité de Paris dont je vous ai parlé. Certainement un coup dur pour les Autochtones qui se voyaient castrés de leur territoire. On peut comprendre aisément. Je suppose qu’il s’agit de l’origine de leur colère envers les francophones. Toujours dans ce regard, les Britanniques devenus Canadiens se retrouvent devant un dysfonctionnement qu’ils attribuent d’abord aux Premières Nations, Inuits et Métis avant de se concentrer sur les Québécois francophones, surtout les indépendantistes. Entre l’arbre et l’écorce, le peuple québécois s’est retrouvé. Ni les uns, ni les autres ne veulent être Québécois. Méchant bordel !
D’autres peuples se joignent au Canada et au Québec sans connaître cet historique dysfonctionnel. La révolte monte de partout. Personne ne comprend ce qui se passe. Des racistes partout et pour tout. Évidemment, il s’agit d’une mauvaise connaissance de la situation. Du racisme, il y en a dans tous les peuples. Tous. Vaut mieux ne pas trop se concentrer sur ce seul aspect. On pourrait se rendre compte que nous réduisons l’autre à cela par une mauvaise compréhension de nous-mêmes.
En tout cas. J’ai milité contre la première élection de la CAQ et je n’ai certainement pas présenté le futur Premier ministre du Québec sous un angle faussement favorable. Au contraire. Pour autant, j’ai appris à connaître sa position et à lui découvrir d’autres caractéristiques.
Je suis obligé de lui dire qu’il a tort et que le Québec doit se séparer pour le bien du Canada et pour le bien des Premières Nations, Inuits et Métis. La constitution canadienne implique un peuple dominant, reflet d’une époque révolue.

« This chronicle analyzes François Legault’s departure through the lens of a centuries-old structural trauma. From Another Angle
Hence the use of his first name in my title.
There are several aspects to highlight, of course. From being a PQ MNA, I saw him become a minister the next day. From a hurried sovereignist, I saw him become a federalist and form his own political party. A millionaire fallen from the sky. From a distance, I watched this reality. This one and many others.
Appreciating someone is a human process. On the surface, we like a certain characteristic and, in doing so, we reduce the other person without meaning any harm. As with all politicians, I recognize the sacrifice made for the public good. Obviously, I am human; I have a particular attachment to sovereignists similar to myself. An imagined bond that feels easier.
Spontaneously, then, I also have this tendency to reduce the other to that appreciated aspect or, conversely, to another that displeases me. In the comments, some Muslims feel rejected by focusing on that law and on secularism (laïcité). Elsewhere, I appreciate him for Air Transat, for his time dedicated to the PQ, and for his will to consolidate Quebec within Canada. Despite his federalist efforts, I continued to appreciate his efforts for the Quebec people.
In my view, the British ceded the territory of Quebec to the French Catholics to agree upon a peace. A surrender by France under the condition of protecting its colonists: the famous Treaty of Paris I told you about. Certainly a hard blow for the Indigenous peoples who saw themselves castrated of their territory. One can easily understand. I suppose this is the origin of their anger toward Francophones. Still in this view, the British who became Canadians find themselves facing a dysfunction that they first attribute to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis before focusing on French-speaking Quebecers, especially sovereignists. Between a rock and a hard place, the Quebec people found themselves. Neither one nor the other wants to be « Québécois. » What a mess!
Other peoples join Canada and Quebec without knowing this dysfunctional history. Revolt is rising everywhere. No one understands what is happening. Racists everywhere and for everything. Obviously, this is due to a poor understanding of the situation. Racism exists in all peoples. All of them. It’s better not to focus too much on this single aspect. We might realize that we reduce the other to that through a poor understanding of ourselves.
In any case. I campaigned against the first election of the CAQ, and I certainly did not present the future Premier of Quebec in a falsely favorable light. Quite the opposite. Nonetheless, I learned to know his position and discovered other characteristics in him.
I am obliged to tell him that he is wrong and that Quebec must separate for the good of Canada and for the good of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. The Canadian constitution implies a dominant people, a reflection of a bygone era.
